Federal Minister Niebel in Myanmar - the first visit of a German Development Minister since 1984

Together with members of the German Bundestag, and representatives of German industry, civil society and the media, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel paid a visit to Myanmar from 12 - 15 February. The visit was occasioned by the political, social and economic reforms in Myanmar, which have been moving ahead rapidly since March 2011 under the new civilian government headed by President Thein Sein. Minister Niebel held political talks in the capital Naypyitaw (joined by EU-Commisssioner Piebalgs) with President Thein Sein and Lower House Speaker Shwe Mann. In Yangon, he met Aung San Suu Kyi, the recently released leaders of the 88 student protests, the National Human Rights Commission and representatives of civil society. On the first day, the delegation had visited projects supported by the Malteser and Welthungerhilfe near Yangon.

Dirk Niebel emphasised in his meetings that the release of the remaining political prisoners, free and fair parliamentary elections in April, and the continuation of the process of national reconciliation with ethnic minorities are important for easing or lifting the EU sanctions. "The impressions I have gained here make me optimistic that the prerequisites will soon be met for the EU sanctions to be lifted", the Minister announced on the last day of his visit. "I will be gradually building up our German development policy involvement", he added, "in step with the progress made. That is our contribution to the democratisation process and to the economic and social development of this promising country". Minister Niebel has already made a total commitment of 6.215 million Euros for the work of various organisations operating in Myanmar.
